Employee turnover calculator

Calculate your employee turnover rate and what it costs

The employee turnover calculator from Skailer is a free tool that works out your turnover rate, attrition, early turnover and retention from three numbers: headcount at the start and end of a period, and how many people left. Add an average salary to see what staff turnover costs you a year. No sign-up, and your numbers stay in your browser.

How do you calculate employee turnover rate?

Divide the number of leavers by the average headcount for the period and multiply by 100. Average headcount is the headcount at the start plus the headcount at the end, divided by two.

Example: a company starts the year with 180 people, ends with 210, and 27 people leave. Average headcount is 195, so annual turnover is 27 ÷ 195 × 100 = 13.8%. If 20 of them resigned, attrition is 20 ÷ 195 × 100 = 10.3%. For a monthly rate, multiply by 12 to get an annual figure.

Turnover rate=Leavers(Start+End)÷2×100%\text{Turnover rate} = \frac{\text{Leavers}}{(\text{Start} + \text{End}) \div 2} \times 100\%
How it works

How the turnover calculator works

01Average headcount
Headcount at the start plus headcount at the end, divided by two.
02Turnover and attrition
Leavers, or only those who resigned, divided by average headcount, times 100. Shorter periods are annualised by 12 ÷ months.
03Early turnover and retention
Leavers in their first 90 days divided by hires. Retention is end headcount minus hires, divided by start headcount.
04Cost of turnover
33% of salary per leaver by default, or your own cost per hire, vacancy days and ramp-up weeks. Work is valued at salary, so the estimate errs low.

Employee turnover, answered

What is a good employee turnover rate?

There is no single good rate: it depends on industry, country and how you count leavers. Published benchmarks put tech at about 10–15% a year. Mercer reports 10–14% voluntary turnover in European and UK tech for 2021–2025, and LinkedIn found 12.9% in tech and media. Track your own trend first.
